April Wrap-Up
- Finished: 5
- Started/continued but not
finished: 4
- Total pages read: 2,746
- Average rating: 3.2
April was a lackluster month, at least rating-wise. I finished five books in April, but only one of them was a novel. I read an ancient Greek retelling, Sarah Underwood’s Lies We Sing to the Sea (2/5 stars). I had high hopes for that book but unfortunately, it was a massive disappointment. You click the link and read more about why I didn’t like the book.
Non-Fiction Reads
I finished four
non-fiction books. The first was a Finnish handbook about dog breeds, Suomen
koirarodut. The three others were about ancient Greek novels: A Study of
Daphnis & Chloe by R.L. Hunter, Chariton of Aphrodisias and the
Invention of the Greek Love Novel by Stefan Tilg, and Dirty Love: The
Genealogy of the Ancient Greek Novel by Tim Whitmarsh. I won’t talk about
my nonfiction reads more in this blog, since one of them was in Finnish and the
other three were more scholarly books than what I imagine a casual reader would
be interested in reading.
May Hopefuls
I’m
currently reading four books that I will continue in May. I’m continuing my
reread of the Collected Ancient Greek Novels, and I’m reading Mary
Beard’s SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome, and another scholarly book
about ancient Greek novels, The Search for the Ancient Novel edited by James
Tatum. In May I’ll also finally finish Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte
Cristo that I started in February. It’s been a beast of a book, but I’m really enjoying it.May hopefuls
I’m also planning to start three books. Two of them are novels: The Library of Broken Worlds by Alaya Dawn Johnson and The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi. I like to go blind into books, but they both seem to be fantasy books. The titles at least have me intrigued!
The last
book I’m starting in May is nonfiction, and yet another scholarly book about
the ancient Greek novels: A Companion to the Ancient Novel edited by
Edmund P. Cueva and Shannon N. Byrne.
